Kirsten Zickfeld attended the First Lead Author Meeting for the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in Guangzhou, China. Kirsten will work with an international team on the Carbon Cycle chapter of the report.
PhD student Claude-Michel Nzotungicimpaye presented his work on a 1D model of wetland methane emissions at the Meeting of the Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU) in Niagara Falls.

Lab Director Kirsten Zickfeld was awarded the 2017 President’s Prize of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) for her paper 2009 “Setting cumulative emissions to reduce the risk of dangerous climate change”, which was one of the first to introduce the carbon budget concept.
Congratulations to former climate lab research assistant Deven Azevedo for winning the 2018 Dean’s Convocation Medal! Deven will go on to pursue a Master’s at the London School of Economics.
Congratulations to former lab member Kasia Tokarska for winning the Tertia M.C. Hughes Memorial Graduate Student Prize of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) for her thesis “The carbon-climate system response at high amounts of cumulative carbon emissions, and the role of non-CO2 forcing and observational constraints on cumulative carbon budgets” at the University of Victoria.
Welcome to SFU Environmental Science student Rachel Chimuka who will join the Climate Research Lab for the summer to work on a project on the carbon cycle response to carbon dioxide removal. To fund her project Rachel was awarded a VPR Sciences Undergraduate Research Assistantshi0p.
Kirsten Zickfeld attended the Fourth Lead Author Meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees in Gaborone, Botswana. Authors started work on the final draft of the report, which will be released in October.
Ph.D. student Mehdi Aminipouri gave a talk at the European Geophysical Union meeting in Vienna about his work modelling the impact of heat mitigation measures on pedestrian thermal comfort in Vancouver.
